3.5 stars.Overall, this was a beautiful enjoyable read. Despite there being a few instances of thin plot ("but why wouldn't they just do this?", or "how could that be if earlier they said this?"), the story is fun enough that you are willing to overlook these occasional things, which were fairly minor. I was definitely impressed with the writing now and again, the author has a unbelievable method with words at problem that other reviewers have pointed out deals with the main character, Celaena. She spends an poor lot of time thinking about all the crazy #$% things she would do to her enemies, but we rarely see any evidence that she actually would or could. We finally obtain to see her fight, in just 2 scenes that don't come until well into the book. And although she thinks of all these violent things she's tempted to do, what she actually does a lot of is preening over beautiful dresses and melting for puppies. And I have no issue with that - I truly liked Celaena, but most of the time she did seem glaringly inconsistent with what the narration tried to claim she was really ere are sparks of potential romance here, and the scenes between Celaena and Dorian and Celaena and Chaol were my favorites. Amusing banter, believable emotion. The overarching story of the tournament and dark magic was interesting, but it was Celaena's evolving relationships with other people that really caught my interest..
